Broken to Better: To Be Better Every Day, Be Better Today
When I upended my life and drove from New York to California, my mind was on finding clients, finding vendors, and, of course, turning a profit. Becoming an industry thought leader, hosting a podcast, and even writing a book weren’t on my shortlist.
Launching my podcast, #BeBetter with Michael Kurland, was a step into a world I hadn’t imagined at the start of my journey. It became a platform to connect with and learn from purpose-driven leaders who embody the Be Better spirit, sharing stories that inspire and challenge us.
Here, I share the culmination of lessons learned, challenges overcome, and insights gained. This isn’t just about my story—it’s a blueprint for anyone aspiring to make their mark, build a lasting legacy, and lead with authenticity and purpose.
1. Craft and Nurture Your Personal Brand
Think of your personal brand. What do you stand for? What do you aspire to be?
As you think about sharing your expertise and insights, remember that becoming a thought leader is consistently offering value and distinguishing your voice in a crowded space. It’s not just about enhancing your personal brand. It’s about contributing meaningfully to your field and ensuring your message resonates and inspires rather than becoming just another echo in the noise.
Building a personal brand is more than just a strategic career move. It’s an ongoing journey of self-discovery and communication. It starts with a deep understanding of your “why,” the core reason behind your business or career choices. This shapes your unique message and sets you apart in your industry.
For me, the transition from managing operations at Branded Group to becoming a voice in the industry was gradual. It involved identifying what I stood for and what I aspired to be. This clarity is crucial if you want to make an impact. Whether your goal is to make money, leave a legacy, or become a thought leader, owning your purpose and living it out in all you do is key to building a personal brand that resonates with others.
Your brand is reflected in the content you share, the decisions you make, and the culture you cultivate within your company. It’s a reflection of your values and vision. As you build your brand, remember that every action, every post, and every decision contributes to how others perceive you and your business.
Be authentic, be consistent, and most importantly, be true to your vision and values. This authenticity is what will attract the right team, clients, and opportunities, paving the way for not just business success but personal fulfillment as well.
2. Embrace Patience and Resilience
Building a personal brand and becoming a thought leader is a gradual process. Milestones like contributing to top publications and joining elite business councils are achievements that come with time and consistent effort. This path requires patience and resilience, as significant accomplishments in branding and leadership take time.
Focus on authenticity and value. It’s important to understand that this growth takes time and may involve collaboration. Avoid the urge to rush. Authenticity is critical in preserving your personal and company’s reputation. Each step, though small, contributes significantly to your overall growth and the strength of your brand.
In building your brand, prepare for a journey of continuous learning and adaptation. Your personal brand should evolve as you gain more experiences and insights. It’s not a static representation but a reflection of your ongoing growth as a leader and professional. Stay open to new ideas and opportunities to share your thoughts, ensuring your personal brand development remains aligned with your core values and vision.
3. Stay Authentic Every Step of the Way
In developing your brand, the most crucial element is authenticity. Whether you’re aiming to make a profit or leave a legacy, your genuine approach will resonate with your team and audience. At Branded Group, my focus on authentic, purpose-driven leadership has been the cornerstone of our success.
As a CEO, your primary role is to steer the business toward profitability, supported by a team that believes in your vision. They’re with you for mutual growth and success, not just to witness your personal achievements. Your decisions impact every aspect of the business, from team morale to client relationships and your overall reputation.
Go Forth and Be Better
The journey of a leader is as unique as the individuals themselves. It’s a path marked not by a single defining moment but by a series of steps, both big and small, toward personal and professional growth.
My experience with Branded Group has taught me that true leadership is about more than just business success. It’s about our impact on those around us and the legacy we leave behind.
Be authentic. Be vulnerable. Be kind. Be gentle when you’re delivering hard messages. Be willing to do the same jobs you’re asking your team to do. Learn from your mistakes, and don’t be afraid to make hard decisions.
To be a better leader, you simply have to be better.
